Netflix Stranger Things

Stranger Things is one of those shows that comes around once a decade. The story and style came together as a perfectly packaged piece of nostalgia from the golden age of media. Where every new piece of content came with a toy, lunchbox, collectable glassware; pretty much whatever your licensing heart could desire.

When approached to create a piece of art for the upcoming Netflix Presents: Visions from the Upside Down coffee table book, it was a dream come true. The brief was wide open, so the gut reaction was to present a showdown between good and evil. Focusing on Eleven and the Demogorgon.

The book was published by Printed in Blood, Del Ray and Randomhouse.

The final piece, some close up details and the book it was originally published in:

The most challenging aspect of the project was the lack of predefined guidelines. I aimed to craft an image that not only paid homage to the show but also reflected my unique creative style. The end result turned out quite well, and I believe I successfully accomplished my initial vision. While the original intent was for the publication alone, Netflix later approached me to broaden its reach beyond those initial scope.

Process

When diving into projects like these, getting the layout just right is crucial. It's all about finding that sweet spot and getting the right composition. I go through a bunch of rough sketches, constantly tweaking and rearranging things. Each time, I build on the previous drawings, trying to improve and refine the overall look with every iteration.

Extended into other materials

Following the debut of the book, Netflix approached with a request to incorporate the work into the show's creative guide. This opened up exciting opportunities for vendors, licensees, and internal brands to seamlessly integrate the graphic into their promotional materials. The initial manifestation of this collaboration was evident on the Netflix store. Subsequently, I received a captivating snapshot showcasing our graphic featured on shirts at a licensed experiential event titled "Stranger Things: The Experience."
